What Are Some of the Warning Signs of a Suspicious Lesion?
- A suspicious lesion can take many different appearances and may be anywhere on the body. The lesion may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous), but only a thorough examination and diagnosis can determine its nature. Some symptoms include:
- Discolored skin: Your skin can start to change color for many reasons. For instance, sun damage can cause pigmentation. If you notice a new area of discoloration, you may want to work with a dermatologist to find the root cause.
- Raised skin: An area of raised skin (with or without discoloration) may be considered a suspicious lesion. Some dermatological cancers begin as small or more substantial raised, bumpy or scaly skin.
- Suspicious moles: A suspicious mole seems to appear suddenly or begins to change color, shape or texture.
- Abnormal skin growths: Some skin growths are benign and even heritable. Others may be indicators of the presence of cancerous cells. A dermatologist has the training and experience to pinpoint whether a skin growth requires treatment.
- Areas containing wounds that will not heal: Do you have a wound that scabs but never seems to fully heal? This type of suspicious lesion may signify the need for professional diagnosis and treatment.
What to Expect During Your Skin Check at Berman Skin Institute
If you have never had a skin examination before, you may wonder what happens. During this type of private appointment, a dermatologist will evaluate your suspicious lesions. They may also want to check other areas of your body to see if you have other suspicious lesions you may not have spotted.
In some situations, the dermatologist may order blood and allergy tests, X-rays or a skin biopsy. The results of these diagnostic tools can be used to diagnose your suspicious lesion and guide you toward the best personalized treatment options.
Eczema can cause your skin to become cracked, inflamed, itchy, dry or bumpy. Eczema may present as a rash, making it difficult to diagnose without the assistance of a professional. Once diagnosed, it can be managed through many topical and advanced treatments, including laser treatments and light therapy.
