Laser Resurfacing Recovery Timeline: What to Expect

Laser resurfacing uses concentrated beams of light to remove damaged skin layer by layer, which can help improve tone, texture, lines and scarring. One question you may have is about recovery time. At Berman Skin Institute (BSI), we are here to walk you through what to expect during your recovery.

How Long Does Laser Resurfacing Take to Heal?

Your laser skin resurfacing recovery time depends on the type and intensity of your treatment, as well as how your skin responds. Your provider can explain what to expect after laser resurfacing based on your treatment plan.

Some people return to work and normal activities within a week or two after CO2 laser resurfacing, while recovery from fractional laser procedures may take two weeks or longer.

The Recovery Stages of Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing before-and-after photos can show the final results, but they do not always show the healing process. Recovery for any laser skin resurfacing happens in stages, though each person’s timeline is different:

  • The first 24-48 hours: In the first 24-48 hours after treatment, redness, swelling and a sunburn-like sensation are common. Your instructions for laser skin resurfacing aftercare may involve wearing nonstick dressings and applying an ointment. Your provider may recommend medication or ice applications to help manage discomfort. Elevating your head while you sleep can also minimize swelling.
  • The peeling phase: As it heals, your skin may produce clear fluid, form crusting or begin to flake. Never pick at the crusts or peeling skin. Keep the area clean. During this stage, your provider will typically recommend avoiding some skin care treatments to protect your skin.
  • New skin: As new skin appears, it may look pink at first before gradually returning to your natural skin tone. Your provider will explain when you can resume wearing cosmetics and return to your regular skincare routine.

If at any point, you develop a fever or experience significant pain, bleeding or other symptoms that concern you, contact your provider.
