TCA Face Peels
Chemical exfoliation is one of the best ways to care for the sensitive skin on your face. Unlike physical exfoliation, you can let the serums and products do the work without damaging your dermis as using a loofah or rough cloth might. If you’re looking to get the most out of a chemical exfoliation treatment, the experts at Berman Skin Institute recommend a TCA peel, one of the most effective options on the market. Our experienced providers know how to tailor our treatments to your precise needs.
What Is a TCA Peel?
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a chemical that interacts well with most skin types. It typically achieves more advanced results than glycolic or salicylic acid, the active ingredients in many resurfacing agents. Generally, TCA treatments involve application to the face, neck, décolleté and hands, or a spot treatment in any of these areas.
During treatment, one of our medical practitioners will layer the liquid over your skin in as many layers as required to go beneath the upper layers of skin and take effect. People with sensitive skin may need to work up to higher-level treatments. Please note that this treatment is not recommended for African Americans or other people with dark skin, as it can lead to pigment discoloration.
What Do TCA Treatments Work On?
TCA peels are lauded for their versatile nature, allowing you to combat a range of skin concerns at once. Some of the most common reasons we recommend a TCA treatment are to help minimize the appearance of:
- Liver and age spots: By sloughing off the topmost layers of skin, TCA peels can minimize brown age spots.
- Acne scars: TCA treatment penetrates to the deepest levels of your skin to address acne and scarring at the source.
- Sun damage and wrinkles: Our TCA face peel combats the free radical exposure that leads to sun spots, wrinkles and more.
How to Prepare for a TCA Chemical Peel
Prior to your peel, you’ll be instructed to avoid tanning for at least two weeks. During your initial consultation, you’ll discuss your medical history and any potential complications with a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner to ensure everyone is as informed as possible.
The treatment itself doesn’t take very long, and most people tolerate it well without anesthesia. You may experience some tingling, itching or a minor burning sensation while the chemical is on your skin, but it usually goes away within minutes. Afterward, the provider will apply Steppie MD® Infinity UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50+ to further soothe and protect the skin.
Most people are able to return to their daily activities almost immediately, though they may experience some skin flaking and peeling throughout the following week as the chemical works its magic. Though you’ll see results with just one treatment, some people choose to enhance the effects with a new peel every four to six weeks.
