CoolSculpting®: Which Parts of the Body Can It Be Used On?

Even with a dedicated fitness routine and healthy diet, stubborn pockets of fat can linger. CoolSculpting® is an innovative, FDA-cleared fat reduction treatment designed to eliminate unwanted fat in various areas without the downtime of surgery.

What Is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® relies on cryolipolysis, the science behind freezing fat cells. During the procedure, your provider uses a specialized device to apply controlled cooling to the targeted area. Because fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than surrounding tissue, the cold temperature damages them without harming your skin.

The frozen fat cells undergo apoptosis, or natural cell death. Over time, your body naturally eliminates these dead cells. This process can permanently freeze away up to 20% to 25% of treated fat.

Most Common Treatment Areas for CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® is highly versatile, allowing your provider to customize the treatment to your body contouring goals. Popular CoolSculpting® areas include:

  • Abdomen: Targets stubborn belly fat.
  • Flanks: Smooths out the sides of your waist or love handles.
  • Submental area: CoolSculpting® chin treatments target the double chin and refine your jawline.
  • Thighs: Smooths both the inner and outer thighs.

Less Common but Treatable Areas

CoolSculpting® treatment areas also include less common parts of the body that tend to harbor fat:

  • Bra and back fat: The treatment targets bulges along undergarment lines.
  • Banana roll: CoolSculpting® buttocks treatments target the area known as the “banana roll” right underneath the buttocks to smooth the lower body.
  • Submandibular area: In 2018, the FDA cleared treatments for the area right below the jawline.

Please note that while some patients ask about CoolSculpting® breast treatments, this is not currently an FDA-cleared treatment area. However, the technology for CoolSculpting® continues to evolve, so it’s best to speak with a provider to understand the latest offerings.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re considering this treatment, you likely have a few questions.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Every patient is unique, meaning there is no one-size-fits-all answer. While some patients see results after a single session, others may need multiple treatments. Your provider will help determine the best approach. Keep in mind that results appear gradually over several weeks to months.

Who Is a Good Candidate for CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is a contouring procedure, not a weight-loss solution. The ideal candidate is at or near their ideal body weight but struggles with localized, stubborn fat.
