Weighing Your Options for Age Spots on the Skin

As we age, our propensity to produce melanin goes into overdrive causing our skin to discolor a bit in various areas. These are known as age or liver spots, and while many assume that they are a natural result of aging, others have refused to allow them to proliferate, and as it turns out, there are a number of ways that we can do just that.

“There’s a number of effective skin treatments for both removing and preventing age spots,” says one dermatologist from Walnut Creek. “Obviously, we’re going to want to help you choose the best option for you, and that’s not always going to be the stuff you can get over the counter. There are some risks associated with those treatments, so it’s really best to consult with a dermatologist before using them.”

#1. Laser Surgery

Laser surgery has been proven to be extremely effective at treating age spots. Laser resurfacing, as it’s called, breaks down and kills the melanin-producing cells, called melanocytes, without damaging the surface of the skin. In terms of removal, it’s going to be one of the best options for individuals looking to remove existent age spots. Patients will notice the spots fading after a couple of months.

#2. Chemical Peel/Dermabrasion/Microdermabrasion

A chemical peel is a form of dermabrasion that removes an outer layer of the skin, which causes regrowth of the skin. This procedure is used extensively to remove wrinkles and is sometimes used for the purpose of removing age spots. It may take multiple procedures before an individual can see the difference, and there is generally some temporary redness directly following the procedure.

#3. Cryosurgery

Sometimes cryosurgery is used for the treatment of age spots. Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the age spot, which then causes the skin around the spot to die off. As it heals, there will be noticeable lightening of the area. There may be some irritation to the area after the application of the liquid nitrogen. There is a slight risk of scarring as well.

#4. Prevention

The best way to treat age spots is to prevent them in the first place. This can be accomplished by using sunscreen on a daily basis, especially during the summer months. Since age spots are a reaction to melanin, which is a reaction to the sun on your skin, the best way to prevent age spots is by wearing UV blocking sunscreen before you leave your home.
